At 07:28 Stations 107(Turkeytown), 17(Smithton) and 19(Yukon) were activated for a vehicle accident on Interstate 70 East bound near Mile Marker 48. As personnel and units went enroute, it was clear the road conditions were very hazardous.
Attack 17 went enroute as Asst.19 arrived to find multiple vehicles involved but only minor injuries and the Attack was advised to block traffic entering Interstate 70 at the Smithton Exit. As the Attack pulled on scene, multiple calls came in to Station 17 for vehicle accidents in the area. Squad 17 went enroute but came across other accidents and found itself on an impassible road way. With Route 981 a sheet of ice, two more accidents occurred in the immediate area of the Squad so crews grabbed the EMS Crash bag and responded on foot to check on any injuries.
With Interstate 70 shut down, vehicles began to detour through Smithton Borough around the accident scene. Smithton's Street crew worked to make Borough streets passable and crews from Station 17 assisted with traffic through town.
After all of Station 17's equipment was placed back in service at 10:45, it was recorded that crews responded to 14 different incidents in South Huntingdon Twp and Smithton Borough.
